Arsenal evaluate European inquiries for in-demand young midfielder

Arsenal are prioritising loan proposals for Ethan Nwaneri as the club look to secure regular first-team football for the highly-rated academy graduate.

The 19-year-old has attracted significant interest during the summer transfer window, but Arsenal would prefer a temporary departure rather than losing him permanently.

According to BBC Sport, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Fulham are among the clubs to have shown interest in Nwaneri, leaving Arsenal with several potential destinations to consider.

A permanent transfer has not been completely ruled out if an exceptional proposal arrives, but the Premier League champions currently view another loan as the preferred solution.

Nwaneri’s situation has received increased attention since he was omitted from Arsenal’s matchday squad for Sunday’s 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta subsequently explained that he had been pushing for larger matchday squads and was disappointed that Nwaneri and Marli Salmon could not be included despite their work during pre-season.

However, Arteta had already acknowledged that Arsenal must consider whether keeping Nwaneri without sufficient playing time would benefit his development.

“I want him to be at the club,” Arteta said last week, before stressing that Nwaneri needs regular football and should only remain if Arsenal can provide enough minutes.

Competition has become increasingly intense following the additions made to Arsenal’s title-winning squad, particularly with Bruno Guimaraes joining an already strong midfield.

Nwaneri can also operate from the right, but Bukayo Saka remains the established first choice there, leaving the teenager facing another difficult route to consistent starts.

A loan would not represent an entirely new approach after Arsenal sent Nwaneri to Marseille for the second half of last season.

The England Under-21 international scored on his Ligue 1 debut against Lens, but what initially appeared a promising move became complicated when Roberto De Zerbi left Marseille and Nwaneri subsequently struggled for starts.

Arteta nevertheless believes the experience accelerated Nwaneri’s development, saying this summer that the youngster returned to Arsenal looking considerably more mature.

That makes selecting his next destination particularly important, with guaranteed opportunities and the suitability of the coaching environment likely to feature heavily in Arsenal’s decision.

Nwaneri remains one of the club’s most valuable young assets and is contracted until 2030 after signing a new long-term deal last summer.

Arsenal therefore appear in no rush to cash in despite widespread interest.

Instead, another carefully selected loan could offer Nwaneri the regular football he requires while allowing Arsenal to retain control over a player they still believe can have a significant future at the Emirates Stadium.
