Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with Real Madrid also firmly in the hunt for the Spaniard.
The 24-year-old joined City from Porto in February 2025 in a deal worth €60 million, but his future at the Etihad Stadium is now in serious doubt.
González is contracted with Manchester City until 2029 and currently holds a market valuation of around €40 million, according to Transfermarkt.
The Spanish midfielder has earned 11 caps for Spain’s Under-21 side and has drawn interest from clubs across both the Premier League and La Liga this summer.
Real Madrid added González to their shortlist after failing to land Rodri, and are also considering Adam Wharton as a potential midfield option at the Bernabéu.
Newcastle United have moved quickly to position themselves as serious contenders, with sources informing CaughtOffside that the Magpies have opened exploratory talks with Manchester City.
Although no formal bid has yet been tabled, Newcastle view González as a potential replacement for Tonali and Guimarães, both of whom departed the club earlier in the window.
Manager Enzo Maresca’s decision to give González just 11 minutes in the Community Shield against Arsenal underlined how limited his role currently is at the Etihad.
Newcastle’s priority is to secure an experienced midfielder before their season opener against Liverpool, and the club believe González could fulfil his potential with regular playing time.
