Do Mike Dean’s Revelations Prove Wenger Was Right About the PGMOL? – Opinion

Mike Dean’s comments about his time as a Premier League referee have once again raised serious questions about refereeing standards and accountability. Here, ken1945 asks whether his revelations lend weight to concerns Arsene Wenger and others expressed many years ago.

I read with amazement the latest episode regarding Mike Dean’s time as a PL referee.

Mike Dean’s admissions raise serious questions

Following on from his admission that he failed to use VAR correctly in order to protect another referee who was having a bad game, he admits he played mind games with himself during matches.

These included setting a time scale for when he used his whistle and how long he could stay in the centre of the pitch.

Of course, none of the above was legal and yet he continued to referee games until he reached retirement age with no consequences whatsoever.

Was Arsene Wenger right to question refereeing standards?

In fact, our own manager Arsene Wenger was fined £40,000 for confronting Dean and accusing him of cheating after one particular match because of his decision-making, as did Klopp many seasons later.

Now, those who argue that proof is needed that referees have corrupted the game can read what I believe is exactly that proof directly from the horse’s mouth once again – but the question is, will they finally accept it?

Strangely enough – or perhaps not? – the PGMOL have not commented on Mr Dean’s astonishing admissions as I write this, and it’s worth remembering that their current leader was also a PL referee during this time of corrupting the rule book.

We have seen how corruption has affected every single other profession in the world, including FIFA, UEFA and other refereeing organisations.

Does Mr Dean’s extraordinary confession convince everyone that this applied during his time as a PL referee as well and, as he hinted, involved others too?

What do you make of Ken’s argument? Do Mike Dean’s revelations change your view of refereeing during that era, and do you believe Arsene Wenger’s concerns deserve to be looked at differently today? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
