David Raya's biggest weakness was exposed as Brighton humiliate Arsenal

Arsenal suffered their most embarrassing defeat in a long time against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Gunners were expected to carry on their brilliant start to the season and pick up another three points against the Seagulls, just as they had done in their last three meetings.

However, Brighton were absolutely outstanding from the first minute of the game and completely deserved their 3-0 victory.

David Raya, who is usually so good, had an evening to forget.

David Raya’s weakness was exposed by Brighton

Raya is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world.

The Spaniard is unbelievable on the ball, is an excellent shot-stopper, and the way he usually dominates his box is second to none. Arsenal really are lucky to have him.

However, like with every player, Raya has a major weakness, and that was exposed by Fabian Hurzeler’s Seagulls side at the Amex.

Brighton’s first two goals of the afternoon came from outside the box. Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas were both allowed space outside the box, and they found the net.

This has been a common theme with goals Raya has conceded – many of them are from outside the box.

In fact, according to Opta, 20.6 per cent of all the goals he has conceded in the Premier League have come from distance. Only Hans Segers conceded a higher proportion (22 per cent).

Hurzeler may have figured that out before the game and encouraged his attackers to have a go from distance – and it worked, twice!

Yes, the likes of Riccardo Calafiori, Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhaes could’ve all done better, but the fact that Raya is clearly struggling with shots from distance is a major concern.

We won’t be surprised if other teams start trying shots from outside the box to expose that weakness in the coming games.
