Arsenal produced the type of victory expected of champions as they survived a gruelling examination from Sunderland to win 2-0 at the Stadium of Light.
Bruno Guimaraes scored his first Arsenal goal shortly after David Raya saved Enzo Le Fee’s penalty, before Bukayo Saka secured the points from the spot deep into stoppage time.
The victory maintains Arsenal’s perfect start under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, with the champions winning their opening four Premier League matches and all six games in every competition.
However, Sunderland made them work exceptionally hard for the latest one.

Just 121 seconds later, Arsenal were ahead.
Guimaraes collected Declan Rice’s pass around 20 yards from goal and curled a magnificent effort off the underside of the crossbar, opening his Arsenal account against the fierce rivals of former club Newcastle United.
Sunderland refused to disappear and continued forcing Arsenal to defend under considerable pressure.
Nordi Mukiele twice threatened from close range as the hosts searched for an equaliser, while Raya remained alert behind an Arsenal defence pushed close to its limits.
Saka eventually removed the uncertainty in stoppage time after Reinildo brought him down inside the penalty area.
The Sunderland defender received his second yellow card before Saka converted the resulting penalty to complete a hard-earned victory.
Arsenal have produced more comfortable performances during their flawless opening weeks, but this one demonstrated another quality required to defend their title.
Three days after winning a demanding Champions League fixture in Naples, the Gunners absorbed Sunderland’s pressure, relied on Raya when required and found decisive moments at the other end.
