Darren England Confirmed As Referee For Brighton vs Arsenal Premier League Clash

England will take charge of Arsenal’s Matchweek 5 trip to Brighton and Hove Albion, with the fixture scheduled for 3pm on Saturday, September 19th.

Scott Ledger and Alistair Nelson will serve as England’s assistants on the day, with Michael Salisbury appointed as the fourth official for the match.

Tim Wood has been named as the VAR official, with James Mainwaring operating as the assistant VAR during the Brighton contest.

Arsenal have a strong record when England is in charge, winning six of their eight matches refereed by the official across all competitions.

The most recent defeat Arsenal suffered under England’s watch came back in 2022, meaning the Gunners have largely prospered with him as referee in recent years.

England’s involvement in Arsenal matches has not been without controversy, however, with a number of significant decisions drawing scrutiny from both sides of the ledger.

In his capacity as a VAR official, England incorrectly confirmed a red card to Myles Lewis-Skelly against Wolves, a decision that was subsequently overturned on appeal.

England also awarded a penalty against Lewis-Skelly during Arsenal’s away match at Everton, a call that was later deemed an incorrect decision by the relevant authorities.

On the other hand, Mikel Merino was fortunate to avoid a second yellow card in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa last December, with England officiating that game.

Declan Rice also escaped without conceding a penalty for handball against Chelsea in March, a match that England also refereed, meaning his decisions have largely balanced out over time.

Given the mixed but broadly favourable history, there are not expected to be major concerns from Arsenal regarding the appointment of England for this particular fixture.
