Second Arsenal clause included in Ethan Nwaneri Borussia Dortmund transfer agreement

Arsenal's additional clause in Ethan Nwaneri's loan move to Borussia Dortmund gives them the option to recall the midfielder in January if required, football.london understands . The 19‑year‑old completed a season‑long switch to the Bundesliga on deadline day, with the fee understood to be around £4million.
Dortmund moved for Nwaneri after summer signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered a serious knee injury in their opening game against Hamburg. The youngster's stint in Germany marks his second loan in as many seasons, having spent six months at Marseille during the 2025/26 campaign.
"With the loan of Ethan, we have managed to acquire a very talented and technically gifted midfielder," Dortmund's managing director for sport Lars Ricken said. "Due to Giannis Konstantelias' extended absence, it was important for us to strengthen our squad again in the short term.
"For us, signing Ethan was the best possible sporting solution. We are delighted that we were able to complete this shortly before the end of the transfer window."
Speaking about Dortmund's interest, Nwaneri said: "As soon as I heard about BVB's interest and a meeting took place, everything developed very quickly. After just a few hours, there were advanced talks taking place behind the scenes.
"So, as soon as I learned of their interest, I was ready to leave. I'm here and I'm going to fight for my place in the team. I'm going to give it my all. As much and as well as I can.
"For the fans. We'll see what happens. I'm ready to fight and sacrifice myself for the team."
The agreement allows Arsenal to recall the attacker in the New Year when the window reopens, should they feel it necessary. The club regularly includes this method in season‑long loans for their young players.
Arsenal had hoped to loan Nwaneri to another Premier League club, but Dortmund were able to offer him European football.
He could even face his parent club when he returns to north London in November, with the two sides meeting in the Champions League on the 24th.

Premier League rules prevent loanees from playing against their parent club unless a specific agreement is in place. However, that restriction does not apply to loans outside England, meaning Nwaneri is eligible to feature for Dortmund in UEFA competitions.
In the Bundesliga, Nwaneri could make his debut away at Hoffenheim on September 5. The Black and Yellows will be aiming for back‑to‑back wins in Sinsheim after opening their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Hamburg.
