Arsenal confirm EFL loan move for highly-rated 20-year-old gem
Arsenal goalkeeper Tommy Setford has joined League One side Stevenage on loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 season.
The Gunners confirmed the deadline-day move on Tuesday, giving the 20-year-old an opportunity to gain regular senior experience after spending the past two years largely around Arsenal’s first-team squad.
However, negotiations stalled and Arsenal began considering alternative destinations before Stevenage emerged as the frontrunners.
The League One move should provide Setford with the senior minutes that have been difficult to find at the Emirates Stadium.
Stevenage’s interest also developed amid uncertainty surrounding goalkeeper Filip Marschall, who was reportedly in discussions over a move to Championship side Millwall.
Setford joined Arsenal from Ajax’s academy in July 2024 and has since been integrated into the senior goalkeeping group while continuing to feature at youth level.
His first-team debut arrived only three months after his move when Arsenal beat Preston North End 3-0 in the Carabao Cup, with the youngster marking the occasion with a clean sheet.
Setford had to wait until February 2026 for his next senior appearance, replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga late in Arsenal’s 4-0 FA Cup victory over Wigan Athletic.
Those remain his only two competitive senior appearances for the Gunners, making the prospect of playing regularly in League One an important next stage in his development.
The Netherlands-born goalkeeper is eligible to represent England and has progressed through the country’s youth system from under-16 level to the under-21s.
He has also accumulated experience in Premier League 2 and the UEFA Youth League during his time in north London.
Setford remained part of Arsenal’s senior set-up last season and provided goalkeeping depth as Arsenal won the Premier League title, but his pathway to competitive minutes remained limited.
The summer arrival of Illan Meslier provided Arsenal with another senior option alongside David Raya and Kepa, further strengthening the case for Setford to continue his development elsewhere.
Arsenal have therefore retained the highly-rated goalkeeper while giving him the chance to experience the demands of regular senior football.
The club wished Setford well at Stevenage and said they are looking forward to seeing how he develops during his first loan spell.
