Tyrese Spicer Rescues Orlando City With Stoppage-Time Strike To Force 3-3 Draw Against Minnesota United
Orlando City snatched a dramatic point from the jaws of defeat as Tyrese Spicer struck deep into stoppage time to earn a 3-3 draw with Minnesota United on Saturday night.
The equaliser arrived three minutes into second-half stoppage time, completing a remarkable comeback after Orlando had surrendered a two-goal advantage.
Spicer was assisted by Antoine Griezmann and Iván Angulo for the goal, which proved to be the sixth of his career and a new personal best.
It was a fitting contribution from a player who had been growing in influence throughout the contest in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Orlando had looked to be in full control of proceedings after Daryl Dike opened the scoring in the 28th minute to give his side a 1-0 lead at the break.
Dike’s strike was particularly notable as it came in his first start of the season and only his fourth appearance overall for Orlando City.
Griezmann then doubled the lead in the 64th minute, finishing off a pass from Justin Ellis to make it 2-0 and seemingly put the game beyond Minnesota’s reach.
The goal was Griezmann’s fourth in just seven MLS appearances, underlining the impact the newcomer has made since arriving at Orlando City.
Minnesota United, however, refused to accept defeat and launched a stunning fightback that briefly looked like it would be enough to steal all three points.
Marcus Caldeira pulled one back in the 71st minute, with Kelvin Yeboah and Kyle Duncan providing the assists for his second goal in five league appearances.
Minnesota were level just three minutes later when defender Anthony Markanich scored his sixth goal of the season, with Joaquín Pereyra registering the assist to complete the turnaround.
With the hosts suddenly in front and momentum firmly on their side, it appeared Orlando City would leave St. Paul empty-handed.
But Spicer had other ideas, producing the moment of quality needed to ensure both sides shared the spoils in an enthralling contest.
The result leaves Orlando City with a record of seven wins, eleven losses, and four draws, while Minnesota United sit at seven wins, seven losses, and eight draws in the standings.
