Arsenal in talks to snatch key genius behind £200m gems from European rival

Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with Borussia Dortmund chief scout Sebastian Krug as the club look to further strengthen their recruitment operation.
According to Sky Germany reporter Patrick Berger, Arsenal have made initial contact with Krug, who has attracted interest from several leading Premier League clubs.
The 43-year-old is also being pursued by Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, meaning Arsenal could face competition if they decide to formalise their approach.
Krug has spent around a decade at Dortmund and was promoted to chief scout in 2022, although he has shared the position with Laurent Busser since November 2024.
His reputation has been built largely around Dortmund’s highly successful model of identifying talented players before their value rises considerably.
Krug played an important role in the recruitment of Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, two players who developed into global stars after moving to Germany.
He was also involved in Dortmund identifying Jadon Sancho and Jamie Gittens, while his relationship with the Bellingham family reportedly helped the Bundesliga club beat Premier League competition to Jobe Bellingham.
More recent arrivals during his period as chief scout have included Karim Adeyemi, Nico Schlotterbeck, Julian Ryerson, Felix Nmecha and Serhou Guirassy.
That record makes Arsenal’s interest particularly notable as Andrea Berta continues reshaping the club’s recruitment structure following his appointment as sporting director last year.
The Gunners have increasingly attempted to combine expensive first-team additions with the recruitment of younger players capable of developing into senior options or valuable assets.
That strategy has been particularly evident this summer, with Arsenal pursuing several highly-rated teenagers alongside their major first-team business.
Vincent Joseph has agreed to join from Liverpool, Mylo Bernard is set to arrive from Crystal Palace and Arsenal have also maintained their pursuit of Blackburn Rovers striker Igor Tyjon.
Bringing in an experienced talent identifier such as Krug could therefore complement a recruitment model increasingly focused on finding players before they command the enormous fees now prevalent at the top end of the market.
Dortmund have demonstrated the potential rewards of that approach particularly effectively, developing Haaland and Bellingham before eventually selling both for substantial profits.
Krug’s future in Germany is now uncertain, with reports suggesting he could be ready for a new challenge after approximately 10 years at Dortmund.
Arsenal have only made initial contact at this stage, so there is no indication yet that an agreement is close.
However, their decision to enter the race suggests the club’s efforts to improve are extending beyond Arteta’s playing squad, with Arsenal also looking to strengthen the operation responsible for identifying their next generation of signings.
