Outstanding Arsenal defender named Player of the Month

Riccardo Calafiori has been named Arsenal’s Player of the Month for August after making an outstanding start to the 2026/27 campaign.

The Italy international collected a dominant 74 per cent of the supporters’ vote, finishing ahead of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Calafiori produced a goal contribution in all three of Arsenal’s matches during August while also helping the Gunners keep three successive clean sheets.

His campaign could hardly have started better, with the defender scoring after only 23 seconds against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Calafiori finished a move created by Myles Lewis-Skelly to give Arsenal an immediate lead in Cardiff before Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s team completed a commanding 3-0 victory.

It was the quickest of Arsenal’s first 668 goals under Arteta and helped the Premier League champions begin the season by collecting another piece of silverware.

Calafiori carried that attacking influence into the opening Premier League fixture against Coventry City.

The 24-year-old advanced down the left before producing a low cross for Kai Havertz to open the scoring in another 3-0 Arsenal victory.

Another decisive contribution followed against Aston Villa.

Calafiori supplied the cutback from which Saka scored the only goal at Villa Park, ensuring Arsenal finished August with a perfect competitive record.

Those two Premier League assists have also earned him a place among the eight nominees for August’s EA Sports Player of the Month award.

Calafiori was the only defender shortlisted after Arsenal won both league matches without conceding and allowed their opponents just one shot on target across 180 minutes.

His influence has been particularly notable because of the freedom Arteta gives him to move beyond the conventional responsibilities of a left-back.

Calafiori frequently advances into midfield and attacking areas when Arsenal dominate possession, providing another passing option and creating overloads further forward.

His excellent month has since been followed by Arsenal’s first defensive setback of the season, with Chelsea scoring after 77 seconds on Sunday.

The champions nevertheless recovered to win 2-1 and maintain their perfect Premier League start, making it three victories from three.

Calafiori’s individual award therefore arrives during an impressive opening to Arsenal’s title defence, but his combination of defensive reliability and attacking output has made him one of the standout performers.

With a goal, two assists and three clean sheets in August, the supporters’ overwhelming verdict reflects just how important the Italian has already become this season.
