Cavan Sullivan Nets First Two-Goal MLS Game To Power Philadelphia Union Past San Diego FC 5-0

Philadelphia Union teenager Cavan Sullivan delivered his finest individual performance of the season, scoring twice and setting up another goal in a dominant 5-0 win over San Diego on Sunday night.

Sullivan opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time with a creative back-heel flick that deflected off the post and into the net.

The young midfielder then added a second in the 62nd minute, powering a shot through the legs of goalkeeper Duran Ferree from a difficult angle to double Philadelphia’s advantage.

It was Sullivan’s first two-goal game in Major League Soccer, a milestone that underlines his rapid emergence as one of the most exciting young players in the league.

Sullivan also provided the assist for Philadelphia’s third goal, chipping a precise ball over the San Diego defence for Frankie Westfield to chase down.

Westfield pulled it back to the penalty spot, where Bruno Damiani was left completely unmarked to convert and score his fourth goal in just two games.

Sullivan now has five goals and six assists across his last seven MLS appearances, a remarkable return that has coincided with a dramatic upturn in the Union’s form.

Philadelphia made it 4-0 in the 87th minute through an own goal by Anibal Godoy, before Malik Jakupovic capped the evening by scoring his first MLS goal in stoppage time.

Goalkeeper Andre Blake was outstanding behind an increasingly comfortable defence, making five saves to earn his seventh clean sheet of the season in his 290th appearance for the club.

The result extends Philadelphia’s unbeaten run to 10 matches since the World Cup break, a stretch that has produced eight wins and transformed their campaign significantly.

The Union, who sit at 9-10-6, brought an end to San Diego’s four-game home winning streak and left the hosts, who are 8-11-6, with serious questions heading into the final stretch of the season.

San Diego travel to Miami next Sunday, while Philadelphia face Kansas City on Saturday in what promises to be another important fixture for both sides.
