Eberechi Eze may have a problem after what happened against Napoli

It feels like a big season for Eberechi Eze.

He has shown glimpses of unstoppable quality since making the £67.5million switch from Crystal Palace last summer. But it’s fair to say he hasn’t always been consistent.

This summer, Arsenal clearly wanted to raise the level of the attack and that involved bringing in a world-class left winger to play ahead of Christos Tzolis.

However, that didn’t happen, leaving Eze as the obvious alternative to Tzolis on the flank. After the Greek winger struggled against Aston Villa on Matchday 2, it looked as if Eze was about to claim that spot and make it his own.

However, since then, Tzolis has stepped up again with a great display against Chelsea. Eze was given his first start of the season against Napoli on Wednesday night, but it felt like an opportunity missed.

Eze played 66 minutes on the left wing but despite Arsenal’s dominance, he didn’t really have an impact on the game.

Tzolis replaced him for the last 25 minutes or so, and had more shots (3) than Eze (2), more shots on target (2 compared to 0), the same number of key passes (2) and of course, assisted the winning goal with a clever touch that set up Martin Odegaard to rifle home from the edge of the box.

That is now Tzolis’ fourth assist in an Arsenal shirt already, and three of them have been for Odegaard.

With the Arsenal captain seemingly back to his best and Mikel Merino providing reliable backup, Eze’s opportunities feel pretty limited to that left flank. But at the moment, he is being outperformed by Tzolis.

The Greek winger has developed a fabulous connection with not just Odegaard but Kai Havertz too, who we weirdly haven’t seen Eze play too much with yet.

He partnered Viktor Gyokeres for the majority of last season, and did so again last night. Given the Swede’s limitations in this Arsenal team, we have to consider that a factor for Eze’s disappointing output too.

We know Eze is a wonderful footballer when he’s at it. But right now, that left wing spot is Tzolis’ to lose.
