“Baffled” Agbonlahor cannot understand why Arsenal sold one player

Gabby Agbonlahor cannot understand Arsenal’s decision to cash in on Gabriel Martinelli this summer, as he believes the Brazilian could have helped them during their recent match against Aston Villa.

Martinelli has moved to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, in a transfer that seemed increasingly likely after Arsenal made it clear he could leave during pre-season. The Gunners ruthlessly asked him and Leandro Trossard to find new clubs, and while the Belgian was quick to find a new home, Martinelli wanted to stay and rejected a move to Galatasaray.

However, Arsenal kept the Brazilian on the market, and when Al Hilal offered the best fee the Gunners had ever received for the sale of a player, the club pushed for Martinelli to leave.

The attacker now plays in Saudi Arabia, but Agbonlahor believes Arsenal could have benefited from keeping him, particularly after their recent performance against Aston Villa.

Agbonlahor questions Arsenal decision

Martinelli could have provided useful depth and competition in attack, especially as a backup to Christos Tzolis. Arsenal have ambitious targets this season, and Agbonlahor believes selling a player with Martinelli’s ability could prove to be a mistake.

The former Arsenal attacker had already shown that he could produce important moments for the Gunners, making his departure a decision that Agbonlahor finds difficult to understand.

Martinelli could have helped

Speaking about Arsenal’s recent match, Agbonlahor pointed to the second half and suggested that Martinelli could have provided the attacking spark they needed.

He said via the Metro:

‘Don’t you look at last night and think a player Arsenal could have done with in that second half was Martinelli?

‘I’m still baffled that Arsenal have sold Martinelli for £50 55m, 25 years of age, some special moments at that football.’

Martinelli’s departure leaves Arsenal without another attacking option who could have offered pace and directness from the bench. Although the Gunners received a significant fee for him, Agbonlahor believes his value to the squad should also have been considered.

Arsenal will now have to continue without the Brazilian, while Martinelli begins a new chapter with Al Hilal. Whether his departure eventually proves to be the right decision will become clearer as the season progresses, particularly if the Gunners encounter further matches where they need more attacking options.
