Ex-Arsenal star completes medical ahead of return to Dutch giants

Former Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson has completed his medical ahead of a return to Feyenoord as a free agent.

Dutch outlet 1908.nl reports that the 26-year-old successfully underwent his medical examinations in Rotterdam, leaving his contract and official presentation as the remaining steps towards completing the move.

Feyenoord accelerated negotiations to bring Nelson back to De Kuip after he ended his 18-year association with the Gunners last week.

Arsenal and the winger mutually agreed to terminate the final year of his contract, allowing him to pursue his next club on a free transfer.

That decision followed another campaign away from north London, with Nelson spending last season on loan at Brentford after previously joining Fulham temporarily in 2024/25.

His departure ultimately brought an end to a relationship with Arsenal that began when he entered the Hale End academy at the age of eight.

Nelson progressed through the youth ranks before making his senior debut in the 2017 Community Shield and eventually accumulated 90 first-team appearances for Arsenal.

He scored eight goals during that time, including a memorable stoppage-time winner against Bournemouth in March 2023 as the Gunners recovered from two goals down to win 3-2.

Feyenoord now offer Nelson the opportunity to return to familiar surroundings as he attempts to rebuild momentum after several seasons disrupted by limited playing time and injuries.

The winger previously spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan in Rotterdam, making 32 appearances across all competitions and scoring four goals.

Nelson became increasingly influential during the second half of that season and played a significant role in Feyenoord’s run to the inaugural Europa Conference League final.

He started the final against Roma in Tirana, where Jose Mourinho’s side secured a 1-0 victory.

Nelson also produced two goals and two assists in 10 appearances during Feyenoord’s Conference League campaign, demonstrating the attacking qualities that made him a popular figure during his first spell in the Netherlands.

His familiarity with the club could now help make the transition straightforward as Feyenoord add another attacking option after the Dutch transfer window closed.

As a free agent, Nelson remains eligible to sign despite the deadline having passed.

With his medical successfully completed, an official announcement is now expected to finalise Nelson’s return to Rotterdam and begin the first permanent chapter of his career away from Arsenal.
