Arteta expects new Arsenal contract to ‘get done’

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal contract comes to an end in 2027, but there have been plenty of recent reports suggesting he intends to extend his stay in north London.

The rumours over the summer were that it just wasn’t the right time for negotiations, with Arsenal’s key negotiators focusing on the transfer market. Then the attentions obviously turned to the start of the new Premier League campaign.

But with a three-week international break now imminent, Arteta was asked whether the situation might finally be resolved.

“I think we are all very much aligned; whenever the time is right, we’ll get that done,” Arteta responded. “There is nothing to be concerned about.

“I don’t know if the timing will be the same (as the last contract extension) or different, I think we both have the same ambition and the same will, so whenever we have time we’ll get that resolved.”

Sami Mokbel recently reported for the BBC that Arsenal are in the process of finalising an agreement with Arteta, with well-placed sources indicating those talks have moved forward recently.

Those involved in talks reportedly have full confidence that Arteta will renew. The expectation is then that the manager will become one of the best-paid managers in football, with Arsenal committed to ‘significantly improving’ on his current deal.

That deal is worth £10m a season plus an extra £5m for Champions League qualification, which has been no trouble for Arteta’s Arsenal in recent seasons.

David Ornstein had confirmed in August that Arteta was set to stay at Arsenal, and that he expects the two parties to reach an agreement on a new deal in due course.

As Arteta suggests, it’s seemingly now just a matter of finding the right time to iron out the details and put pen to paper.
