Arsenal-linked 20-goal talent makes shock request to quit Manchester United
Arsenal-linked teenager JJ Gabriel has formally asked to leave Manchester United in a remarkable development surrounding one of England’s most highly-rated young players.
The 15-year-old has submitted notice requesting the immediate cancellation of his United registration, which would allow him to become a free agent, according to The Telegraph.
Gabriel has been at Old Trafford since joining from Chelsea at the age of 11, but has now informed United that he wants to end his association with the club.
Manchester United can oppose the request, with Premier League rules requiring the club, player and parent or guardian to agree before a youth registration can ordinarily be cancelled.
If an agreement cannot be reached, the matter can be referred to the Premier League for a binding decision.
United are reportedly hopeful the situation can still be resolved despite being surprised by Gabriel’s decision.
The timing is particularly striking because the forward had been under consideration for Wednesday’s EFL Cup third-round game against Brighton & Hove Albion.
A senior appearance would make Gabriel the youngest first-team player in Manchester United’s history.
The England youth international has been one of the outstanding players of his generation and enjoyed a remarkable 2025/26 campaign.
Gabriel scored 20 goals in 21 Under-18 Premier League appearances and became the inaugural winner of the competition’s Player of the Season award.
He was also named Manchester United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year after becoming its youngest-ever recipient.
His development has continued this season, with Gabriel training alongside United’s senior players and travelling on their pre-season tour.
He further enhanced his reputation last week by scoring a hat-trick against Sabah on his UEFA Youth League debut.
Gabriel scored three times from 16 attempts during the 5-0 victory, completing the full 90 minutes.
His uncertain future will inevitably attract attention elsewhere.
Arsenal have previously been linked with Gabriel, while Manchester City made an attempt to recruit the youngster last year.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have also been credited with interest, although there is currently no suggestion that Gabriel’s request has been prompted by an agreement with another club.
Any Arsenal interest would be particularly intriguing given the pathway the Gunners have recently provided to exceptional young players.
Max Dowman became Arsenal’s youngest Champions League player last season before subsequently becoming the Premier League’s youngest goalscorer, while Ethan Nwaneri also made his senior debut at 15.
For now, Gabriel’s future remains unresolved, with United still able to contest his request.
However, the prospect of one of English football’s most coveted teenagers becoming available is certain to put Arsenal and several other major European clubs on alert.
