Arsenal Survive Sunderland Storm as Bruno Scores a Stunner in 2-0 Win

Arsenal survived a ferocious Sunderland challenge at the Stadium of Light before second-half goals from Bruno Guimarães and Bukayo Saka secured a hard-earned 2-0 Premier League victory.

The final score certainly does not tell the whole story. Sunderland pushed the Gunners all the way, while David Raya produced a superb performance in the Arsenal goal, including a penalty save, to keep Mikel Arteta’s side alive during a chaotic second half.

Arsenal frustrated in goalless first half

Arsenal had opportunities during the opening 45 minutes but couldn’t make them count.

Declan Rice almost released Saka early on, Gabriel tried his luck from distance and Kai Havertz was involved in several of Arsenal’s most promising moments.

A slick move involving Christos Tzolis and Martin Odegaard ended with Havertz firing over, before another excellent Havertz effort was tipped over by Robin Roefs.

Former Gunner Granit Xhaka was heavily involved for Sunderland, both from set-pieces and defensively, even getting himself in front of another Havertz effort shortly before the break.

The hosts had their moments too, encouraged by a hostile and extremely vocal Stadium of Light crowd.

There was also concern for Ben White towards half-time as Jurrien Timber began warming up, with the defender appearing to have a problem.

Half-time: Sunderland 0-0 Arsenal.

Raya keeps Arsenal alive before Bruno strikes

If Arsenal had been frustrated in the first half, the opening stages after the restart were considerably more worrying.

Sunderland came flying out and Arsenal suddenly found themselves defending wave after wave of attacks.

Timber replaced White, while Bruno Guimarães came on for Myles Lewis-Skelly, receiving plenty of boos from the home supporters.

Then came a huge moment.

Sunderland were awarded a penalty after Ezri Konsa’s challenge on Ballard. Enzo Le Fée stepped up in the 56th minute – but Raya saved it!

It proved absolutely crucial.

Only two minutes later, Arsenal punished Sunderland at the other end as marquee summer signing Bruno Guimarães scored his first goal for the Gunners to make it 1-0.

What a turnaround.

The goal gave Arsenal some much-needed control, although Sunderland refused to go away.

Xhaka was booked for a foul on Bruno and Arsenal began creating more chances themselves. Havertz passed up another promising opening when he elected to pass rather than shoot, while Saka saw a deflected effort saved.

Roefs then produced an excellent stop from a Havertz header after Odegaard had found Saka in the build-up.

Arsenal thought they had doubled their lead in the 78th minute when Timber converted from an Odegaard free-kick, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Raya produces more heroics

Sunderland continued throwing everything at Arsenal.

Tempers began rising, Brian Brobbey was booked following a confrontation with Gabriel, and Mukiele fired over following another Sunderland corner.

Then, in the 84th minute, Raya produced arguably his best sequence of the night.

Sunderland attacked from another Xhaka corner and somehow the Arsenal goalkeeper kept the ball out amid a barrage of efforts.

It was outstanding goalkeeping.

Eberechi Eze and Martin Zubimendi were introduced for Tzolis and Rice, with Mikel Merino later replacing Odegaard as Arsenal attempted to see out an increasingly frantic finish.

Six minutes of added time only increased the tension.

Players from both teams began flaring up, Gabriel and Mukiele picked up bookings, Havertz was also shown yellow and Raya was called upon again in the 94th minute to make yet another save.

Then came one final twist.

Reinildo fouled Saka inside the penalty area in the 96th minute, receiving his second yellow card and subsequent red.

Saka stepped up and scored the penalty to finally kill the contest.

Full-time: Sunderland 0-2 Arsenal.

This was anything but comfortable.

Arsenal had chances in the first half, survived enormous pressure after the break and needed an exceptional Raya performance to stay in the match.

But Bruno’s debut goal changed the momentum before Saka finished the job from the spot.

Three points from an incredibly difficult night at the Stadium of Light – and perhaps one of those victories that tells you rather more about a team’s character than a comfortable win ever could.
