Arsenal star “was just very good” – Tuchel praises Birthday Boy on England start
Myles Lewis-Skelly’s return to the England set-up has gathered momentum quickly, with Thomas Tuchel praising the Arsenal youngster following Saturday night’s 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley.
Only a few months ago, Lewis-Skelly was dealing with the disappointment of being left out of England’s World Cup squad. Now, on his 20th birthday, the Gunner was handed a starting place against the world champions.
That alone represents quite a turnaround.
Lewis-Skelly earns Tuchel’s trust
Lewis-Skelly started in midfield, a position Arsenal supporters are already familiar with seeing him occupy. Although much of his initial breakthrough into Mikel Arteta’s senior side came at left-back, the Hale End graduate has increasingly been used centrally for the Gunners, including last season.
Speaking after the game, Thomas Tuchel said that Lewis-Skelly’s selection had been earned rather than being any kind of birthday gesture.
“No presents here for no one. Also not on his birthday.”
The England manager was also clearly pleased with what he saw from the Arsenal youngster.
“He did very well for Arsenal in this position. I think it suits him a bit better than left-back.”
Tuchel went on to describe Lewis-Skelly as having produced a good performance and done what was required of him.
“He’s just… Was just very good and very… Had a good match today. So well done. Did everything that was needed. Good performance.”
Quite a birthday for the Arsenal youngster
England may have ended the evening on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline, but individually this felt like another significant moment for Lewis-Skelly.
Being overlooked for the World Cup could easily have represented a major setback. Instead, just months later, he has worked his way back into Tuchel’s plans and been trusted from the start against Spain.
Doing it on his 20th birthday makes the occasion even more memorable.
For Arsenal, it is another indication that Lewis-Skelly continues to make progress at both club and international level, and Tuchel’s comments suggest he has certainly made the most of his latest England opportunity.
