Arsenal star was brilliant vs Ipswich but Mikel Arteta could still drop him now

There was a lot to like about Arsenal’s performance against Ipswich Town.

The Gunners scored four great goals, were dominant for large parts of the game, and even though they conceded twice for the first time this season, there is no reason to sulk.

Mikel Arteta made plenty of changes to his Arsenal side, and there were a number of very impressive performances.

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s display is one such example, but he still may not have done enough to keep his place in the side.

Lewis-Skelly started as a left-back in Arsenal’s 4-2 win over Ipswich Town.

Riccardo Calafiori was given a break, while Piero Hincapie missed the game due to injury. That meant the Arsenal academy graduate had to step in.

We thought Lewis-Skelly was excellent for large parts of the game. He had 92 touches of the ball and completed 74 of his 77 attempted passes, maintaining a stunning 96 per cent passing accuracy.

Usually, such a performance warrants a place in the starting lineup in the next game, but we think Arteta dropped a hint that Lewis-Skelly will be benched.

That’s because Bruno Guimaraes, who also started the game, was taken off a few minutes after the hour mark, which suggests he was given a rest ahead of the clash against Brighton.

Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard are the two other obvious starters in midfield, while Calafiori will likely return to left-back.

That leaves no space for Lewis-Skelly, who will have to settle for a spot on the bench at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The teenager will have every right to be disappointed, but we think Guimaraes would make a lot more sense against Brighton.

The Brazilian showed his class after coming on against Sunderland, scoring a stunning goal to break the deadlock.

Arteta also hailed Guimaraes for his pass to Bukayo Saka that led to the winger winning a late penalty at the Stadium of Light.

Brighton have caused problems for Arsenal in recent years, so the Gunners boss needs to go with his best lineup on Saturday.

We think Guimaraes gets in ahead of Lewis-Skelly in that team.
