Arsenal launch major cost review months after ending 22-year Premier League title wait
Arsenal are working with global consulting firm Boston Consulting Group on a review of the club’s operations which could result in cost reductions.
Sky News City editor Mark Kleinman reports that the Premier League champions have appointed BCG to examine their cost base less than three months after ending their 22-year wait for the title.
The precise scale of any savings has not yet emerged, while there is currently no indication that Arsenal have decided to make widespread redundancies.
The review is nevertheless notable given the significant growth and investment that has accompanied Arsenal’s transformation into Premier League champions and Champions League contenders.
BCG is one of the world’s leading management consulting firms and advises companies on restructuring, organisational efficiency and cost-management programmes, among other areas.
The consultancy itself argues that successful cost transformations should focus on redesigning operating structures, reducing low-value work and overheads rather than simply imposing uniform cuts across an organisation.
For Arsenal, the review arrives shortly after another expensive transfer window.
Bruno Guimaraes joined from Newcastle United for £75 million, while Arsenal also invested heavily to sign Ezri Konsa, Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis.
Several senior players departed during the same window, including Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Fabio Vieira and Reiss Nelson, while Ethan Nwaneri joined Borussia Dortmund on loan.
There has consequently been considerable change within Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s squad, although the club’s ambitions remain substantial.
Arteta said before the season that Arsenal want to become “the best club in the world”, stressing the importance of having elite facilities, players and infrastructure to achieve that objective.
The Gunners have backed those ambitions with results, winning the Premier League last season and reaching the Champions League final before beginning the current campaign with five consecutive victories.
Arsenal’s commercial and matchday operations have also expanded significantly in recent years, with the women’s team providing another example of the club’s wider growth.
The latest available accounts for Arsenal Women showed turnover rising from £15.26 million to £21.54 million in 2024/25, driven partly by increases in matchday and broadcast income.
Against that backdrop, appointing BCG does not necessarily indicate a retreat from Arsenal’s sporting ambitions.
Instead, the review appears aimed at examining whether the club can operate more efficiently as its revenues, workforce and football operation continue to develop.
What remains unclear is where any eventual savings would be made and whether the process will lead to staffing changes.
For now, Arsenal are reviewing their costs while simultaneously continuing to invest heavily in Arteta’s attempt to build sustained success at the Emirates Stadium.
