Arsenal included in unusual Cesc Fabregas contract agreement

Arsenal included in unusual Cesc Fabregas contract agreement

Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas reportedly has a special clause in his Como contract that could facilitate a return to the Gunners as manager for a relatively small fee.

According to journalist Chris Wheatley, Fabregas’ deal contains a release clause applicable specifically to Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea, the three major clubs he represented during his playing career.

The 39-year-old is contracted to Como until 2028 and is currently understood to have no intention of leaving the Serie A club.

However, the clause potentially provides Arsenal with a straightforward route to appoint their former midfielder should the managerial position become available in the future.

Fabregas has emerged as one of European football’s most highly-rated young coaches following his work in Italy, having initially joined Como towards the end of his playing career.

He subsequently moved into coaching and helped oversee their rise from Serie B before establishing the club in the Italian top flight.

Como have since continued their remarkable development under the Spaniard and secured Champions League qualification, further enhancing his reputation across Europe.

Fabregas attracted considerable interest in 2025, with Bayer Leverkusen among the clubs keen to appoint him after Xabi Alonso’s departure.

The former Spain international ultimately remained with Como, while he also publicly committed himself to the club despite interest from Inter Milan.

His reluctance to leave for another prominent job could make the reported Arsenal clause particularly notable given his long-standing connection with the north London club.

Fabregas joined Arsenal from Barcelona’s academy as a teenager in 2003 and developed into one of the Premier League’s outstanding midfielders under Arsene Wenger.

He made more than 300 appearances for the Gunners and was appointed club captain before returning to Barcelona in 2011.

The Spaniard later joined Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles, but has repeatedly spoken warmly about Arsenal and Wenger’s influence on his career.

There is currently no suggestion Arsenal are considering a managerial change, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta firmly established after guiding the club to major success.

Fabregas also appears content to continue his development at Como rather than rush into his next position.

Nevertheless, the reported contractual arrangement means Arsenal could have an unusual advantage should they ever decide that their former captain is the right man to take charge at the Emirates Stadium.
