Arsenal gets vindicated over Gabriel incident against Chelsea
Arsenal were perceived to have got away with it when Gabriel was not sent off against Chelsea after he kicked towards Emiliano Martinez during a goalmouth scramble and did not appear to be aiming at the ball.
The incident occurred during a scramble in the Premier League game, which the Gunners eventually won, and Gabriel escaped a red card even though Martinez made the most of the contact. The decision quickly became a talking point after the match.
Chelsea Challenged the Decision
Chelsea believed the incident deserved a sending off, and it became a major debate on television and social media. The Blues subsequently took action to challenge the decision after the match, believing an injustice had been done to them during the encounter.
The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel has now reviewed the incident and agreed that Gabriel Magalhaes was right not to be sent off during Arsenal’s win over the Blues earlier this month, according to Metro Sport.
The panel has taken another look at the incident and believes Gabriel did not do enough to warrant being sent off. As a result, the decision made on the pitch has been supported following the review.
That outcome may not make Chelsea happy, particularly after the controversy surrounding the incident. However, it provides backing for Gabriel and the decision taken during the match.
Gabriel Escapes Further Punishment
From Arsenal’s perspective, the decision confirms that their defender was not deemed to have committed an offence serious enough to receive a red card. The incident occurred in a crowded area, making it difficult to determine exactly what Gabriel intended.
Gabriel genuinely wanted to kick the ball during the goalmouth scramble, and he would have been lucky to make the most important contact in the situation. His actions may have looked worse because of the way Martinez reacted to the contact, but the review has ultimately supported the on-field decision.
Chelsea will have to accept the panel’s assessment, despite their belief that the incident warranted stronger punishment. For Arsenal, the decision means Gabriel can move forward without the incident leading to further disciplinary action.
