Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Como attacking midfielder Nico Paz as manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad’s creative options for the long term.

Paz has flourished under Como manager Cesc Fabregas, who has been so impressed by the youngster that he has compared him to Argentina legend Lionel Messi, citing the treatment he receives from opposition players.

Como completed a permanent deal for the midfielder this summer, paying around €60 million to acquire his full rights following his impressive development in Italian football.

However, Real Madrid ensured they retained considerable influence over his future by inserting a unilateral €80 million buy-back clause, valued at approximately £68.7 million, valid for the summer of 2027.

That clause represents a substantial obstacle for Arsenal, as even if the Gunners negotiated a successful deal with Como, Real Madrid could still activate their option and return Paz to the Bernabeu.

Paz himself has explained that staying in Italy was his preferred course of action this season, wanting consistent first-team football rather than competing immediately with Real Madrid’s established midfield stars.

AS reported that the Argentine actively chose to continue his development with Como despite Real Madrid expressing a desire to bring him back this summer.

Arsenal’s interest in Paz is understandable given his technical quality, his ability to operate between the lines, and his versatility across multiple attacking and central midfield positions, all of which suit Arteta’s system.

The Gunners already boast significant midfield depth with players including Martin Odegaard, Bruno Guimaraes, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino all capable of contributing at the highest level.

Paz would therefore not arrive as a panic purchase, but rather as a high-quality creative addition with considerable scope to develop further into a world-class operator.

The Real Madrid buy-back clause effectively hands the Spanish giants first say over Paz’s future, meaning any lengthy pursuit by Arsenal could be undermined at the final hurdle.
