Arsenal change stadium plans as new Emirates approach emerges

Arsenal have decided against pursuing a major expansion of the Emirates Stadium after spending more than two years assessing redevelopment options.
The Gunners had explored an ambitious project which could have increased the ground’s capacity from its current 60,704 to around 80,000.
However, The Times reports that Arsenal have now abandoned plans for a large-scale redevelopment and will instead pursue a gradual “evolution” of their north London home.
A significant factor behind the decision is understood to be the disruption that extensive construction work would create.
A project on that scale could have forced Arsenal to temporarily relocate while work was completed, something the club are reluctant to do while competing for major honours.
The Emirates has been Arsenal’s home since their move from Highbury in 2006, but the stadium’s capacity has increasingly become a talking point because of the enormous demand for tickets.
Arsenal nevertheless believe improvements can be made without undertaking the kind of comprehensive rebuild that had been considered.
Attention will instead turn towards upgrading facilities and the overall matchday experience, with additional hospitality options also forming part of the plans.
One change already under way is the introduction of licensed safe standing in sections of the Clock End, while the club intend to expand the scheme to the North Bank for the 2027/28 season.
Arsenal are also working to improve mobile connectivity inside the Emirates, with progress on upgrading 5G coverage expected during the current campaign.
The direction of travel was discussed at the first Arsenal Advisory Board meeting of the season, which included senior club officials and supporter representatives.
Arsenal’s priority remains winning major trophies while operating sustainably, meaning increasing the commercial potential of the Emirates without sacrificing the atmosphere generated by regular supporters.
The Arsenal Supporters’ Trust says it has received assurances that there are currently no plans to reduce the number of general admission seats despite the expected growth of hospitality facilities.
The decision also means Arsenal will not immediately attempt to match some rivals through capacity alone, with Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur among the Premier League clubs currently possessing larger grounds.
Instead, Arsenal appear ready to maximise what they already have.
That means the Emirates is set for continued changes behind the scenes, but the prospect of an enormous redevelopment and temporary move away from the club’s home has now been shelved.
