Santa Clara could extend their unbeaten Primeira Liga start to six matches when they travel to face Arouca on Sunday at Estadio Municipal de Arouca.

The hosts have been equally solid, picking up 10 points from a possible 15 to sit fifth in the early-season Portuguese top-flight table, just one place and a point below the Azorean visitors.

Arouca have built their promising start to the campaign on defensive solidity, keeping clean sheets in wins over Vitoria de Guimaraes and Moreirense before their first setback of the season arrived in the form of a 2-0 defeat at defending champions Porto.

Vasco Seabra's side responded perfectly to that loss, though, coming from behind to beat Maritimo 2-1 at home, before a goalless draw at Estoril Praia last time out ensured the Wolves took at least a point from four of their first five fixtures.

Seabra would be pleased with how his side have performed so far this term, especially considering they had finished 12th and 8th, respectively, in the previous two seasons under the 42-year-old manager, who would not rule out a tilt at continental qualification this time around.

A return to familiar ground this weekend provides an extra boost for Arouca, who are unbeaten in their last six home league games (D1) since early April, including victories in each of the most recent three on their own turf.

However, that home solidity could be tested on Sunday against a side the Wolves have failed to beat in their last three meetings (D2, L1), with last season's Primeira Liga encounters producing draws across both grounds.

Meanwhile, Santa Clara have been impressive this season, having opened with a draw against Nacional before back-to-back victories over Academico de Viseu and Famalicao and a 1-1 stalemate at Alverca on matchday four.

However, Petit's men recorded their most eye-catching result of the campaign last time out, thrashing Rio Ave 4-0 at Estadio de Sao Miguel, with strikes from Brenner Lucas, Tiago Ribeiro, Vinicius Lopes and Luis Fernando taking the Azoreans' tally to nine goals scored and just three conceded across their opening five matches.

That defensive record is bettered only by Gil Vicente and leaders Porto – both of whom have conceded one goal each – and Santa Clara will hope that excellence at both ends proves decisive this weekend as they look to extend their unbeaten start to the campaign.

It will not be lost on head coach Petit, however, that his side have struggled for wins on the road in recent months, with no other side currently in the division having managed fewer away victories in the top flight than the Azoreans' three from 19 trips during that period.

Arouca's only injury concern surrounds Miguel Puche, leaving Seabra with a near fully-fit squad to select from as he weighs up whether to make changes following the draw at Estoril.

Ivan Barbero is expected to lead the line for the hosts, with the Spanish forward, who has found the net in three of his five matches this season, looking to rediscover his scoring touch after drawing a blank last time out.

Santa Clara have no fresh fitness concerns following the win over Rio Ave, though long-term absentee MT (Matheus Araujo) will continue his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury.

Petit is likely to name virtually the same side, with Brenner expected to retain his spot on the wings having now found the net in back-to-back matches, including last weekend's opening goal in his first start for the club.

Goncalo Paciencia is expected to lead the line once again despite failing to score in his last two outings. The 32-year-old did provide an assist against Rio Ave and will be looking to add to his four-goal tally for the Primeira Liga campaign.

Arouca's outstanding home record this season makes them a difficult side to beat at Estadio Municipal, and their defensive discipline should ensure Santa Clara are made to work hard for any openings.

However, the visitors' own defensive numbers and attacking form suggest they are equipped to avoid a first defeat of the campaign, making a share of the spoils the most likely outcome on Sunday.
