Scanlon gets off to good start for Arsenal U21s

The signings of James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye from Manchester United for Arsenal’s U21 squad may have appeared a little unusual at first glance but the initial signs suggest that the new arrivals could have a positive impact.

Both players went straight into the starting lineup as Arsenal U21s faced Brighton on Monday night, with the game ending 2-2.

Scanlon, who was deployed on the left wing, certainly made a positive first impression as he opened the scoring with an impressive strike in the first half after receiving the ball from Ife Ibrahim.

Ogunneye featured at right-back and the experience that the two former United players possess at U21 level could be hugely beneficial in terms of helping their new Arsenal team-mates.

Scanlon has also featured prominently on the international stage for Gibraltar at senior level and seems determined to make an impact at Arsenal as quickly as possible.

At the ages of 20 and 19 respectively, Ogunneye and Scanlon probably won’t be with the U21s for too long beyond this season but their presence in the squad could well help to get the best out of some of Arsenal’s other prospects.

There is also a possibility that Ogunneye and Scanlon could train with the first-team and perhaps get on the bench for domestic cup games should the opportunity arise.
