Arsenal block summer exit for 16-year-old wonderkid

Arsenal block summer exit for 16-year-old wonderkid

Arsenal are not planning to send highly-rated defender Marli Salmon out on loan this summer despite the teenager becoming eligible for a temporary move before the transfer window closes.

Salmon turns 17 on August 29, three days before the summer window shuts, but Arsenal currently intend to keep him at London Colney until at least January, according to The Athletic.

The decision means the academy prospect is expected to continue developing around Arsenal’s first-team environment during the opening months of the 2026/27 campaign rather than immediately gaining regular senior football elsewhere.

Salmon has already agreed his first professional contract with Arsenal, with the deal set to formally take effect once he reaches his 17th birthday.

The London-born defender has been with Arsenal since joining the academy at under-11 level in 2019 and has developed into one of Hale End’s most highly regarded defensive prospects.

Primarily a centre-back but also capable of playing at right-back, Salmon made considerable progress towards senior football during Arsenal’s title-winning 2025/26 campaign.

He made his first-team debut aged 16 in Arsenal’s 3-0 Champions League victory over Club Brugge in December before receiving further senior opportunities as the season progressed.

Salmon was handed his first Arsenal start against Mansfield Town in the FA Cup in March and continued training regularly with the senior squad during the closing stages of the campaign.

That involvement has continued this summer, with the youngster featuring during Arsenal’s preparations for their Premier League title defence.

Salmon played in the 3-0 friendly victory over MK Dons in July before coming off the bench during the 4-1 win against Girona earlier this month.

His performances have strengthened his position among a group of academy players attempting to establish themselves around Mikel Arteta’s senior squad.

A loan could eventually become the next stage of Salmon’s development, particularly if Arsenal decide regular senior minutes elsewhere would be more valuable during the second half of the season.

For now, however, Arsenal appear to believe keeping the defender close to the first team offers the best environment for his progression.

That stance also leaves open the possibility of further competitive opportunities in domestic cup competitions and Europe before his situation is reassessed when the January transfer window arrives.
