Arsenal sign England youth striker after year-long transfer pursuit

Arsenal have completed the signing of highly-rated teenage striker Igor Tyjon from Blackburn Rovers as the club continue strengthening their academy with some of Britain’s best young talent.

The Gunners confirmed the arrival of the 18-year-old on Friday following a lengthy pursuit that had seen them make previous attempts to prise him away from Ewood Park.

Tyjon expressed his delight after finally completing the switch and admitted Arsenal’s status as reigning Premier League champions contributed to his decision.

“It feels amazing,” Tyjon said.

“I’ve waited a long time for this and I can’t wait to get started.

“Who doesn’t want to join the champions? I can’t wait to be part of the team.”

Arsenal have tracked Tyjon for more than a year, having initially approached Blackburn last summer before returning with another attempt in January.

Blackburn resisted those approaches, but Tyjon subsequently rejected the opportunity to sign professional terms with the Championship club as Arsenal continued pushing for his signature.

The striker arrives with some senior experience despite his age, having made three first-team appearances for Blackburn after making his professional debut against Bristol City as a 16-year-old.

Tyjon joined Blackburn from Rochdale in 2023 and has since developed into a highly-regarded England youth international capable of operating across the forward line.

He represented England at last year’s Under-17 World Cup in Qatar and has also previously played for Poland at Under-16 level.

His international experience means he already knows several Arsenal academy players, including Jack Porter and Max Dowman, which should help him settle quickly in north London.

Tyjon is expected to initially feature for Arsenal’s Under-21s while also spending time training with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s senior squad.

There is also an expectation that opportunities could emerge for the teenager at first-team level during the season, particularly in cup competitions.

His arrival represents another significant addition to Arsenal’s increasingly aggressive academy recruitment strategy.

The Gunners have been targeting promising players from rival academies and lower-league clubs as academy director Pascal De Maesschalck and the club’s recruitment staff attempt to strengthen the pathway towards Arteta’s first team.

Tyjon highlighted that pathway as another major factor behind his decision, describing Arsenal’s staff, players and development structure as “top”.

The striker will now look to establish himself at Under-21 level before attempting to follow the pathway already demonstrated by the likes of Dowman and other Hale End prospects into Arteta’s senior plans.
