Confirmed: Ethan Nwaneri joins Dortmund on loan

Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Ethan Nwaneri on a season-long loan.

The England under-21 international moves to the Bundesliga in search of regular senior football, with Arsenal opting against a permanent sale despite interest from several clubs this summer.

Nwaneri will be hoping for a more productive experience than his six months at Marseille. He made an immediate impact after arriving in January, scoring on his debut, but the departure of head coach Roberto De Zerbi and the brief exit of sporting director Medhi Benatia, who returned two days later, underlined the instability that made it difficult for him to settle. In total, the teenager played 412 minutes across 11 appearances, scoring twice and providing one assist.

Many Arsenal fans had hoped Nwaneri would be reintegrated this season after showing so much promise in 2024/25, when he was thrust into action as an emergency deputy for Bukayo Saka. His pre-season was encouraging too, with goals against MK Dons, Girona and Dortmund, but his omission from the squad for the Community Shield and the opening two league games made his position increasingly clear.

In fairness, Mikel Arteta has an abundance of experienced midfield options at his disposal, while 16-year-old Max Dowman is also pushing for more opportunities. For Nwaneri, regular minutes elsewhere make more sense than another season spent on the fringes.

Dortmund, coached by Nico Kovac, opened their Bundesliga campaign with a 2-0 win over Hamburg and are in German Cup action tonight. That game is likely to come too soon for Nwaneri, but Saturday’s meeting with Hoffenheim is quickly followed by a Champions League clash with Villarreal, so he may not have to wait long for his first opportunity.
