Aston Villa in 'pole position' to sign £25m star linked with Arsenal
Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Arsenal-linked Aaron Wan-Bissaka, according to the Daily Mail.
The Gunners have been credited with an interest in Wan-Bissaka as they look to strengthen at right-back.
Ben White and Jurrien Timber are Arsenal’s current options in the position. White struggled with injuries last season but is currently fit, while Timber remains sidelined with a groin problem.
Cristhian Mosquera can also operate on that flank, but has been unconvincing, leading Arsenal to consider a move for Wan-Bissaka.
The English champions could now miss out on the DR Congo international, with Villa reportedly in ‘pole position’ to sign the West Ham United defender.
Wan-Bissaka wants to leave the Hammers this summer following their relegation to the Championship.
The 28-year-old missed West Ham’s pre-season friendlies and their League Cup win over Portsmouth last Saturday, suggesting he could be on his way out of the club.
Arsenal prioritising other targets over Wan-Bissaka
Wan-Bissaka’s athleticism and excellent one-on-one defending make him a good fit for Arsenal. He can also provide cover at left-back.
He averaged 1.6 interceptions per game in the Premier League last season, more than Timber and White, although Timber registered more tackles per game.
His top speed of 35.9 km/h in the league would have ranked joint-first with Riccardo Calafiori among Arsenal players.
Despite his attributes, Arsenal appear to be prioritising reinforcements at centre-back following William Saliba’s injury, as well as on the left wing.
The Gunners currently have enough cover at right-back, making a move for Wan-Bissaka less convincing. White is expected to be the first choice, while Mosquera could provide cover until Timber’s return.
The north London club are also reluctant to pay West Ham’s £25 million asking price, further reducing the likelihood of a transfer.
