Arsenal 3-0 Coventry: Gunners make perfect start to Premier League title defence

Arsenal began the defence of their Premier League title in convincing fashion with a comfortable 3-0 victory over newly-promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.
Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard ensured Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s side followed their Community Shield triumph over Manchester City with another commanding performance.
The champions entered the new campaign determined to prove last season’s long-awaited title was only the beginning, and Coventry quickly discovered the scale of the challenge awaiting them on their return to the Premier League after 25 years.
Christos Tzolis was lively from the outset on his league debut and played an important role as Arsenal repeatedly attacked down the left.
The breakthrough arrived after 15 minutes when Tzolis and Riccardo Calafiori combined to dispossess Milan van Ewijk before the Italian delivered for Havertz to finish confidently.
Havertz’s goal continued his excellent run at the Emirates, having also scored the decisive winner against Burnley in Arsenal’s final home fixture of last season.
Arsenal soon doubled their advantage following another flowing attack involving Declan Rice, Odegaard and Tzolis.
The Greek international’s low delivery proved too difficult for Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth to hold, leaving Saka with the simple task of converting the rebound.
Coventry occasionally threatened to make Arsenal uncomfortable, with Loum Tchaouna almost catching David Raya out with an ambitious effort, but Frank Lampard’s side largely struggled to escape sustained home pressure.
Any slim hopes of a second-half comeback disappeared four minutes after the restart.
Ben White pulled the ball back for Odegaard, whose mishit finish nevertheless found its way beyond Rushworth to make it 3-0 and effectively end the contest.
Arsenal could have extended their advantage, with Myles Lewis-Skelly forcing Rushworth into a save and Odegaard going close to adding his second.
Arteta was instead able to manage his players’ workloads as the match progressed, introducing the likes of Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi with the points already secure.
The result extended Arsenal’s remarkable unbeaten home league run against promoted opposition to 46 matches and provided another demonstration of the depth available to Arteta.
Arsenal had already produced an impressive statement by dismantling Manchester City 3-0 in Cardiff, but Friday represented the first meaningful step towards retaining their crown.
Arteta had insisted before the game that the champions must “start from scratch” and rediscover the desire that carried them to last season’s title.
Two matches, six goals and two clean sheets into the new campaign, Arsenal could hardly have made a more assured start.
