Arsenal prospect Luis Munoz takes another major step forwards in his development
It was in Italy two years ago that Max Dowman broke the record for the youngest ever UEFA Youth League goalscorer as he found the net for Arsenal U19s against Atalanta.
Yesterday Luis Munoz, aged just three days older than Dowman was in 2024, scored the winner for Arsenal U19s against Napoli.
This isn’t to say that Munoz’s development over the next couple of years will follow the exact same path as Dowman’s, but it is clear that the former is also undoubtedly one of Arsenal’s best prospects.
Already this season the 14-year-old has made an impact for Arsenal U18s and he will be aiming to establish himself as a key figure at that level over the next few months.
Although he can play in a variety of positions including as an attacking midfielder or up front, it seem that the England U16 international is best suited to operating as a left winger, where he can make good use of his directness and flair.
The way in which Munoz moves with the ball is an excellent sight and is similar to Dowman in some ways, albeit on the opposite side of the pitch.
David Horseman, who is overseeing Arsenal’s Youth League team, clearly has a lot of faith in Munoz given that he gave him a Youth League debut against Bayern Munich last season at the age of 13, with the prospect becoming the youngest ever player to feature in the competition.
Given that he can’t play for the U21s in competitive games this season (a rule in place for all U15 players), the U19s is the highest level at which Munoz can operate this campaign.
The youngster has already previously trained with the first-team and it wouldn’t be surprising if such involvement increases in the near future.
Munoz needs to be given time to develop and playing at a variety of levels – U19s, U18s and maybe even still U16s for important matches – could help his progress.
It will be intriguing to see how much progress Munoz can make this campaign and the Youth League could certainly help his development, just as it did with Dowman.
