Andrea Berta shows lesson learnt by inserting clause in Ethan Nwaneri loan deal

Andrea Berta has come under enormous criticism from Arsenal fans this summer.

The Gunners were expected to stamp their authority as Premier League champions and sign a few huge names to strengthen their squad.

However, Arsenal failed to land a marquee attacker, and many feel that could cost them this season, especially in the Champions League.

Berta definitely deserves criticism for that, but he should be praised for learning his lesson on one particular deal: Ethan Nwaneri’s loan to Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal announced on deadline day that Nwaneri has joined Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan deal.

The teenager showed during pre-season that he is good enough to play at the highest level, but there is just no space for him in Mikel Arteta’s side.

Nwaneri experienced the same last campaign and was loaned out to Olympique Marseille in the January transfer window.

Soon after that happened, Mikel Merino suffered a long-term injury, while Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze had their fitness issues as well.

The ideal solution at the time would’ve been to recall Nwaneri from his loan at Marseille to help out, but that was not possible.

That’s because Andrea Berta did not include a recall clause in Nwaneri’s loan deal at the time.

Now, the Arsenal sporting director seems to have learnt his lesson.

James Benge of CBS Sports has revealed on X that the Gunners have included a clause in Nwaneri’s contract that allows them to cut the loan short in January.

That is a very smart move as Arsenal are short of options in attack, and if things go horribly wrong in the first half of the season, they can just bring Nwaneri back to solve their problems.

However, we really hope Arsenal’s current attacking options will be enough, just so that Nwaneri gets a full season at Dortmund.
