Arsenal fans have a lot to say about Viktor Gyokeres' performance vs Napoli

Arsenal fans have a lot to say about Viktor Gyokeres' performance vs Napoli

Arsenal have just secured a 1-0 win against Napoli in the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta’s side should’ve scored four or five, but they wasted numerous opportunities. Bukayo Saka, Mikel Merino and Piero Hincapie all missed fairly easy chances.

That could’ve cost them, but skipper Martin Odegaard bailed Arsenal out with a stunning strike to give them the win.

All in all, it was a decent away performance by the Gunners, but one player still continues to divide opinion: Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal fans deliver verdict on Viktor Gyokeres’ performance vs Napoli

Gyokeres was handed his first start of the season against Napoli tonight.

The Swede showed some good movement, almost picked up a spectacular assist with his trivela cross to Saka, and was a handful to deal with at times.

However, the former Sporting man touched the ball just nine times and didn’t have a single shot at goal. He looked anonymous at times.

That has sparked a discussion about him online.

One Arsenal fan said: “Now I’ve seen the light. Please sell Gyokeres.”

Another wrote: “Gyokeres doesn’t just generate football. He’s such a poor fit for this Arsenal team. A proper recruitment error!”

“The difference between Kai Havertz and Gyokeres is day and night,” said another.

Another Gooner reacted by saying: “Gyokeres had a decent game on the ball, but he still looks like a mismatch for what this system demands. When the service isn’t direct and isolated (crosses, through-balls in behind), he almost disappears. He’s not built to drop deep, combine, or generate chances for teammates the way Havertz does. He needs the ball served to him.”

“I’ve never seen a striker that struggles to get chances like Gyokeres. He can’t move around the box to get on the end of chances,” wrote another.

Viktor Gyokeres’ Arsenal future hangs in the balance

One fan above is spot on: Signing Gyokeres is looking like a recruitment error by Arsenal.

Yes, the Swede scored over 20 goals last season and deserves enormous praise for helping the Gunners win the Premier League title.

However, he just does not fit Arteta’s system the way Havertz does, which is why he is rarely ever going to start ahead of him.

Arsenal are sure to try and sign a new striker in one of the next two transfer windows, so Gyokeres’ days are numbered.

If he doesn’t fit into the system like Arteta wants, we expect him to be sold.
