COVENTRY OPENER | BE CAREFUL OF THOSE DREAMY THOUGHTS

COVENTRY OPENER | BE CAREFUL OF THOSE DREAMY THOUGHTS

Well, here we are, my friends, the day our Premier League defence begins. How exciting? Premier League Champions, Arsenal. Still feels very surreal that we actually did it, now we have to prove we’re great champions, and defend it with guts and bravery, and hopefully become the first ever Arsenal side to retain the trophy.

I’ll bang the table fiercely and tell everyone that the summer has been quite good to Arsenal. We’ve spent £200m net, again. We have the most expensive Premier League 28-year-old midfielder of all time in Bruno, and we added the most expensive 28-year-old Premier League centre back of all time in Ezri Konsa. We also added 24-year-old Christos Tzolis, a player who has a sharpness on the left we’ve maybe lacked over the past two years.

We also retained all our best players, we gained players to the squad that haven’t really been there in 2026, and our biggest problem, for once in our history, is there’s too much depth because no one will buy the overspill.

Low drama is the most boring winning ingredient you can imagine. We’re so settled, I can imagine the house in the burbs, with the picket fence, the two dogs, and the marriage that is so depressingly empty no one even has the energy to seek a divorce. Did I take that too far? You get the point. We’re a picture of middle-aged, phase 5 stability. Look at us, I mean, honestly, just look at us.

But… beware the mirage. The picket fence rot, the sick dogs, and the wife who has filed for divorce in absentia… the most dangerous position to be in as a fan is thinking you can start the victory dance in August. Always remember how you were feeling about the extraordinary spending spree Liverpool went on last season. Defeated, angry, hopeless… only to see them finish 5th.

That seems less likely for Arsenal, but we have our own concerns…

New fitness staff starting from scratch…

Burned-out players…

The post-big-win dip…

The lack of margin busters after a season we won on many of the margins…

Sport at the level of the Premier League is unforgiving, there is no slow descent; there’s only a plunge… one minute you’re Pep Guardiola smoking cigars with the boys while Rodri spews bile about mentality… the next thing, you’re on a documentary, trauma-dumping about your ex-wife to a dressing room of twenty-somethings because Kyle Walker was tired.

Don’t think it can’t be Arsenal… it can.

Did I make you sad? Good.

Now let’s get out that little bag of toxic positivity and share it out.

We are stable, we have the best squad in the Premier League, out of the big 6 managers, Arteta has the most sauce by a margin.

Enzo Maresca — Man City

Michael Carrick — Man United

Andoni Iraola — Liverpool

Unai Emery — Aston Villa

Xabi Alonso — Chelsea

The mess in the places below Arsenal is so extraordinary, I’m finding it quite hard to muddle my way to any sort of predictions this season. Chelsea have signed players like Rogers, but also lost big names like Cucurella, and Enzo does not want to be there. Man City have Enzo as manager, you know it ain’t right. Carrick is not having a great pre-season and we know there’s a low ceiling. Unai Emery has shunted out a lot of very top talent, the next phase of the Villa project has to gel in the Champions League. Who knows what is going to happen with Iraola, Liverpool has no defenders of note!

This league, on paper, is presenting itself to Arsenal in the most coquettish way… that means playful. But that is the trap. It’s like when your SILLY GOOSE of a friend presents a derby game as an obvious three-pointer… DO NOT SAY THAT IN FRONT OF THE FOOTBALLING GODS… because we know such presumptuousness is often punished by the force of a giant wet kipper to the chops.

The approach from Arsenal will be less cocksure than that of the fans… I suspect the new fitness team will be hoping to patch the team up, share out the minutes, get energy back into the legs while in motion, and hope that Arsenal can be within striking distance by the turn of the year. There are going to be bad results, flatulent performances, and some injuries… but it will be the same for others. The main difference this season is quite simple… will players put their bodies on the line with the same reckless abandon as they did last season now they have secured hardware?

We’ll see…

As for Coventry at home? It should be a fairly simple task. I know we have to fear these games, but we’re not a serious team if we drop points out the gate, and I believe Arsenal to be a very serious team. Am I the silly goose?

Frank Lampard is a very good coach who does great things in the Championship. I’m not sure he’s as much of a thinker when it comes to the Premier League, his ways often come unstuck, and his temperament is easy to rattle. Coventry have blown a big wedge of cash this window, but it’s hard to see them staying up…

Arsenal are more settled, higher quality, and obviously… Viktor will want to skewer the club that rebirthed him after his terrible stint at Brighton.

I’m looking forward to the game, it should be a BANGER. Then we’re off to the races. This is as easy as it gets for a very long time. Boys better be fired up!

Ok, we’ll be live after the game, but before that, check out the new Le Grove Membership deal.

Below is the members package for the next season. The two notable changes are that LIVE shows will be behind the paywall for members this season, so if you want to be in the chat calling me a fraud, you’ll have to be a member. I’ve also shifted the way we do On The Whistle access for Premier League games. This season, it’ll be the model of partial access to the Prem content, if you want the full show, you’ll have to be a member. That means an extra 19 hours of exclusive content for members this season. We’re also adding data presentations to the mixer this season, so we can analyse the data so the hot takes have an extra smugness to them. There’s still plenty for the free tier this year, we’ll be keeping The Dugout going as well as the Therapy Sessions. If you get your membership here, you also get 2 premium pieces of writing a week, 104 for the year.
