Arsenal send title warning with dominant Community Shield win over Man City

Arsenal send title warning with dominant Community Shield win over Man City

Arsenal began the new season exactly as they would have wanted after producing an impressive performance to beat Manchester City 3-0 and lift the Community Shield in Cardiff.

Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard secured the first silverware of 2026/27, with the Premier League champions delivering an early reminder of their quality ahead of their title defence.

Arsenal needed only 24.5 seconds to take control at the Principality Stadium as Myles Lewis-Skelly produced an excellent reverse pass for Calafiori to finish calmly beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.

It was the fastest goal in Community Shield history and immediately rewarded the intensity with which Arsenal approached their first competitive fixture of the new season.

City enjoyed spells of possession afterwards, but Arsenal looked sharper and repeatedly threatened when Enzo Maresca’s team surrendered the ball.

The advantage was doubled after 28 minutes when Odegaard’s cross found Christos Tzolis at the far post and the summer signing intelligently headed back across goal for Havertz.

Havertz directed his header past Donnarumma, who could not keep the effort out, giving Tzolis an assist on an impressive competitive Arsenal debut.

City finally threatened towards half-time, but David Raya denied Phil Foden and Erling Haaland before Ben White produced an important block against Jeremy Doku.

Arsenal could even have entered the interval three ahead after Josko Gvardiol cleared Odegaard’s effort off the line.

The captain did not have to wait much longer.

Tzolis helped carve City open again three minutes after the restart, with Odegaard collecting the ball inside the area before sending Donnarumma the wrong way with a clever dummy and rolling into the opposite corner.

There was no meaningful route back for City as Arsenal controlled the remainder of the contest, while substitutes Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice were also given valuable minutes following their delayed returns from World Cup duty.

Bruno Guimaraes impressed on his first competitive Arsenal appearance before Rice replaced him at half-time, while Tzolis provided another encouraging indication of what he could add on the left.

The result represented Arsenal’s biggest Community Shield victory since another 3-0 win over City in 2014 and maintained Arteta’s perfect record in the competition as a manager.

More importantly, Arsenal looked hungry rather than satisfied after finally ending their 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season.

The Community Shield will not determine what happens over the next nine months, but Arsenal could hardly have produced a more convincing opening statement.

With their Premier League defence beginning against Coventry City on Friday, the champions have started the new campaign exactly as they intend to continue.
