Arsenal could make huge Gyokeres plus cash offer for Julian Alvarez

Arsenal’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez could be heading towards a dramatic conclusion, with fresh reports claiming the Gunners remain prepared to use Viktor Gyokeres as part of a blockbuster deal for the Atletico Madrid striker.

The possibility of a swap involving the two forwards is not new. Just Arsenal reported last month that Gyokeres could be included in negotiations to bring Alvarez to the Emirates.

However, the situation surrounding both players has developed considerably as we enter the final days of the transfer window.

Reports today suggest Arsenal are still willing to include Gyokeres in a package for Alvarez, with one claim putting the proposed offer at the Swedish striker plus £68.5million.

That would represent an extraordinary show of intent from the Premier League champions as Mikel Arteta looks to further strengthen an already formidable squad.

Alvarez’s Arsenal stance appears to be changing

The timing is particularly interesting given the latest developments surrounding Alvarez.

As we reported earlier today, the Argentine has long preferred a move to Barcelona, but Spanish outlet AS now claims his previous rejection of Arsenal is no longer quite as definitive.

Barcelona remain his preferred destination, but the Emirates is reportedly an alternative he has not completely ruled out as his attempts to leave Atletico become increasingly complicated.

Arsenal are said to have remained in contact with Alvarez throughout the process, and talkSPORT now reports that the Gunners are actively pursuing a deal before the transfer window closes.

Atletico, meanwhile, remain publicly adamant that they do not want to lose the forward.

That creates a fascinating situation. If Alvarez wants to leave but Atletico are reluctant to sell, Arsenal may need to present them with an offer that is extremely difficult to refuse.

Giving them Gyokeres as an immediate attacking replacement alongside a substantial cash payment could potentially provide exactly that.

Could Gyokeres hold the key to an Alvarez deal?

There is another reason why the renewed swap reports are particularly intriguing.

Gyokeres’ own Arsenal future has suddenly become uncertain.

The striker didn’t play a single minute in Friday night’s 3-0 victory over Coventry City, despite being named on the bench, and we have already discussed whether that omission could indicate a change in his position within Arteta’s squad.

Then came reports that Barcelona are studying the possibility of taking Gyokeres on loan, with the player reportedly interested in moving to the Catalan giants.

Now we have the prospect of Arsenal potentially using him to secure Alvarez instead.

Nothing suggests at this stage that a Gyokeres-plus-cash proposal has been accepted by Atletico, and the precise financial figures being reported should therefore be treated with caution.

But the pieces are beginning to fit together in an intriguing way.

Arsenal want Alvarez. Alvarez appears more open to Arsenal than he was earlier in the summer. Gyokeres is being linked with an exit, and Atletico would need to replace their striker if they eventually sanctioned his departure.

What looked like an ambitious swap suggestion earlier in the summer suddenly doesn’t seem quite so far-fetched.

With deadline day approaching, Arsenal could face a huge decision: stick with Gyokeres and the squad that has already started its title defence impressively, or use the Swedish striker as part of an audacious attempt to land one of their major transfer targets.

If the opportunity really does present itself, it would be one of the biggest calls Arteta and Andrea Berta have made this summer.
