Arsenal attacking options shrink as forward completes move to European rivals

Gabriel Jesus has left Arsenal for Barcelona after the Spanish champions moved late in the transfer window to secure the experienced striker.

Barcelona have paid around €10 million (£8.6m) for the 29-year-old, with another €4.5m potentially due to Arsenal through performance-related add-ons.

The move represents a significant compromise from Arsenal’s position earlier in the summer, when interested clubs were reportedly quoted between £18m and £20m for Jesus.

However, his contract was due to expire next summer and his injury history, wages and reduced role made securing a higher fee increasingly difficult.

Barcelona ultimately viewed those circumstances as an opportunity to add an established centre-forward without committing a substantial portion of their transfer budget.

Head coach Hansi Flick was also keen on Jesus after Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres left the Catalan club this summer.

Barcelona had pursued Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez as their preferred attacking target, but their inability to make progress eventually encouraged them to consider alternatives.

For Arsenal, Jesus’s departure brings an increasingly peripheral four-year spell at the Emirates Stadium to an end.

The Brazilian immediately transformed Arsenal’s attack after arriving from Manchester City in 2022 and was instrumental in their unexpected title challenge during his debut campaign.

His trajectory changed significantly after suffering a knee injury with Brazil at the 2022 World Cup, however, and further fitness problems repeatedly interrupted his attempts to rediscover that early form.

The most serious setback came when Jesus ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in January 2025, keeping him out for an extended period.

He returned to make 27 appearances last season but managed only three Premier League starts as Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz moved ahead of him in the centre-forward hierarchy.

Jesus nevertheless contributed six goals as Arsenal finally ended their long wait to win the Premier League title.

He leaves north London with 32 goals and 22 assists from 123 appearances across all competitions.

The timing of the transfer is particularly significant for Arsenal because Gabriel Martinelli is also expected to complete a move to Al Hilal.

Those departures reduce Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s attacking options considerably and increase the importance of the club’s attempts to recruit another forward before the window closes.

Jesus, meanwhile, receives the opportunity to revive his career at another European heavyweight, with Barcelona offering him a route back to more meaningful first-team involvement after his role diminished at Arsenal.
