Andrea Berta suddenly has a new transfer priority after watching Borussia Dortmund beat Arsenal

Arsenal have suffered a 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup.

The Gunners had won their own pre-season tournament in each of the last four years, but Mikel Arteta could not make it five in five.

It was not a terrible performance by Arsenal by any means. In fact, an argument can be made that they deserved not to lose that game.

However, what cost them has suddenly become Andrea Berta’s new transfer priority now.

Andrea Berta needs to sign a new defender for Arsenal ASAP

If you’re just going to look at the results, Arsenal’s pre-season has not gone to plan.

The Premier League champions have lost two of their three games so far, conceding seven goals in those fixtures.

That is unacceptable for a team who have had the best defence in the division in each of the last three seasons.

Against Dortmund, both Cristian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhaes made mistakes that led to goals, and that cannot happen when the season starts.

Furthermore, Arteta confirmed that Jurrien Timber is still ‘weeks away’ from full fitness, while William Saliba is out for months.

That leaves Arsenal short of world-class options on the right side of their defence, which is why Berta’s priority has to be to sign a new player in that role.

The Gunners have been linked with Ezri Konsa, who can play as centre-back as well as right-back, while another target is Cristian Romero, who Arsenal fans think can be converted into a full-back.

Neither player is of Saliba or Timber’s level, but Berta would’ve realised after seeing the mistakes made against Borussia Dortmund that he cannot go into the new season without a defensive addition.

This may seem reactionary, but Arsenal’s priority now has to be a new defender – much more than a new attacker.

Gabriel Magalhaes and Cristhian Mosquera cannot play together

Individually, Gabriel Magalhaes and Cristhian Mosquera are both excellent defenders.

The Brazilian is among Europe’s elite in that position, while the latter is one of the most promising young centre-halves on the continent.

However, Gabriel and Mosquera are too similar in style, and that is not a good combination at all.

Arsenal need a calm and composed defender next to Gabriel – someone who can take control while his partner plays aggressively.

Mosquera cannot do that, which is why he should not be paired with Gabriel in the upcoming campaign.
