Gyokeres shows again why he should not start for Arsenal

Viktor Gyokeres has sat on the bench in Arsenal’s first four competitive matches of the season, failing to come on in their opening two league games as Kai Havertz was preferred.

The decision was baffling because Gyokeres performed well in some parts of last season, and many expected this campaign to be the year he would finally show that he is a top player.

However, the striker started the Champions League game against Napoli last night and showed why Mikel Arteta has been preferring him on the bench in favour of the German.

Havertz is not perfect, but the attacker is a much better frontman compared with Gyokeres, while his all-round game also appears to suit the Gunners much better.

Gyokeres struggles to make an impact

Arsenal want more from Gyokeres, but the Gunners will not be happy with his performance against Napoli, particularly given the limited impact he managed to make during his time on the pitch.

According to Football365, the numbers Gyokeres registered in the match highlighted his struggles, with the striker failing to produce a shot despite playing as the frontman.

He was on the pitch for 73 minutes and registered just nine touches, with only three of those coming in the opposition half. He attempted no dribbles and, despite leading the Arsenal attack, had no shots in the game.

Striker still creates four chances

Despite his limited involvement, there was one positive aspect to Gyokeres’ performance against Napoli.

The report adds that the former Brighton man still managed to create four chances from the limited possession he had during the match.

That statistic provides some encouragement, but the overall numbers will still concern Arsenal, particularly because the striker was given an opportunity to make a strong impression after spending the opening matches of the campaign on the bench.

Gyokeres will now need to improve his performances and show Arteta that he can offer more to the Arsenal attack if he wants to establish himself as the preferred frontman for the Gunners this season.
