The Athletic: Sunderland hijack Arsenal's move for 21-year-old winger

Sunderland have reached an agreement to sign Arsenal target Malick Fofana from Lyon, according to the Athletic.

Fofana is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Black Cats and has been granted permission to undergo a medical.

The 21-year-old had reportedly reached a personal agreement with Arsenal and spoken with manager Mikel Arteta over a potential move.

However, the Gunners were unwilling to meet Lyon’s asking price, allowing Sunderland to beat them to the signing of the Belgium international.

Arsenal have prioritised attacking reinforcements this summer but have missed out on several targets. They have, however, managed to sign Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge.

They have not been completely ruled out of signing Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, but a deal would only happen if the Argentina international agrees to the move.

Despite the imminent departure of Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, Arsenal still have a well-stocked attack, contrary to some concerns.

Although Tzolis is the only natural left winger in the squad, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze can provide cover for him.

Bukayo Saka, Madueke and Max Dowman are the natural right-sided attackers, while Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres are the central forward options. Mikel Merino can also play as a makeshift striker.

The north London club have strengthened the midfield and defence by signing Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United and Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa.

They look well-poised to compete on all fronts again, even if they fail to sign an attacker before the end of the transfer window.

Arsenal have begun their Premier League title defence brilliantly, winning their opening two games against Coventry City and Villa.

Arteta’s side are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they face city rivals Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
