‘Arsenal is more than just a football club’ Georgia Stanway speaks after Paris FC friendly

Following Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Paris FC on Sunday, Georgia Stanway spoke to the written press. The first two questions are from Arseblog News.
On integrating into a new midfield after playing in a similar midfield setup at Bayern…
It’s been really good. I think, of course, it’s a process to be able to build the connections and get those movements flowing. I think if I look at my time at Bayern, I played consistently in the same position for four years with a midfield around me that was also super talented. And I think it’s exactly what it is here. But, of course, I just have to be patient that the connections don’t happen straight away and it’s important to get the flow, get the rhythm and try and get the consistency as soon as possible.
On Arsenal buying lots of players from the Bundesliga this summer…
The Bundesliga probably goes under the radar. It’s not necessarily talked about or watched. But as you can see, we’ve got a bundle of talent that’s come over. I think the WSL is a more competitive league and it’s become so much more attractive and that’s why players want to come here.
On how the WSL has changed since she left in 2022…
I’ve always loved the WSL. I always loved my time at City, I was there for 7 years and for me to move to Bayern was something just completely different. The WSL’s always been super attractive, but I think post Euros winning 2022. That’s really when it rocketed. Of course, I escaped it exactly at the same time as that. So I kind of missed the massive uptick, but I think at the same time, I’ve been able to watch it and see it from afar, and of course, it’s something that everybody wants to be a part of. It’s a super competitive league. Arsenal is more than just a football club. It’s a community and it brings people together and you can see today on a Sunday afternoon how many people have turned up.
On looking forward to playing at the Emirates…
I’m really, really excited. Of course, we got the good weather today, the blue skies and a nice pitch. I think last time I played here, the rain was going sideways. I’ve had a really good opening day. Really excited to see the fans on a much bigger scale. I can’t help but smile when they sing my name.
On how Renee Slegers wants her to play in the Arsenal midfield…
I think that’s the beauty of having so much quality is the fact that anybody in those top six positions can probably play any position. And I think that’s what allows us to be fluid with our movements, that allows us to be able to express ourselves. And, of course, it’s about trusting each other on the ball. If somebody wants to go deeper, you can run away and alternate movements. The instruction is to just go out there and show what you got and I think that’s what’s so special at the moment and with Renee is that she’s got belief in every individual to go out there and play their own style of football within the Arsenal way.
On whether she has set targets for this season…
For me personally, especially in these first six months, it’s just to find my feet. I want to try and create as much consistency as possible within my own performances, build connections with my teammates, but both on and off a pitch. I think, for me, it’s important to build off the pitch, because it allows to be able to demand more on the pitch and just having that eye contact and not necessarily the communication, but to be able to understand each other based off our movement. And I think, as a team, we just want to put ourselves in the best possible position. Control everything that we can control, take each day as it comes, each game as it comes, putting the work in on the grass, that can hopefully get us the results. All we can do is give it our best shot and knowing at the end that we left no stone turned.
