How Mourinho convinced Vinicius Junior to snub Arsenal

Jose Mourinho played an important role in Vinicius Junior rejecting a move to Arsenal and remaining at Real Madrid this summer, with the manager revealing how he helped convince the Brazilian star to stay.

Arsenal wanted to sign Vinicius as he entered the final year of his previous contract at Madrid. The Spanish side had struggled to secure a new agreement with the attacker, while his entourage were reportedly open to the possibility of taking him away during this transfer window.

Real Madrid did not want to lose Vinicius, but the two parties were unable to agree on a new contract for several months. This created the possibility that the attacker could be sold, and Arsenal were eager to take advantage of the situation.

The Gunners had been in talks to ensure they would be the team Vinicius joined if he left Madrid. His arrival could have taken their squad to another level, particularly given his experience of winning major honours with the Spanish club.

Vinicius has won two Champions League titles in Madrid, among other trophies, and that is a competition Arsenal want to win. His signing could therefore have represented a transformative addition for the Gunners, but he ultimately remained in Spain.

Mourinho has now revealed that he spoke with Vinicius and encouraged him to stay at Real Madrid. He said, as quoted by Sport Witness:

“Obviously, I spoke with him, but Vinícius has fallen in love with Real Madrid.

“The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil, and you only know Real Madrid. When you leave, you’ll know what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave, it’s not worth it’.”

Mourinho’s comments suggest that he believed Vinicius had no reason to leave a club where he had already established himself as a key player. The Brazilian ultimately chose to remain at Madrid, ending Arsenal’s hopes of bringing him to the Emirates.

For Arsenal, missing out on Vinicius represents a significant disappointment, particularly because his experience and success in the Champions League would have added another dimension to their squad.

The Gunners must now continue without the Brazilian, while Vinicius remains committed to Real Madrid. Mourinho’s intervention appears to have played a role in ensuring that the attacker stayed where he had already achieved significant success.
