Arsenal agree mutual exit to release long-serving 26-year-old star
Arsenal have reached an agreement with Reiss Nelson to terminate the winger’s contract by mutual consent, bringing his long association with the club to an end.
The 26-year-old had entered the final year of his deal at the Emirates Stadium, although Arsenal retained an option to extend his contract for another 12 months.
Nelson will now become a free agent and is expected to assess his options carefully amid interest from clubs in England and abroad.
West Ham United had previously held discussions with Arsenal over a potential move earlier in the transfer window, but a transfer ultimately failed to materialise.
Arsenal will consequently receive no fee for their academy graduate, although terminating his contract will remove his salary from the wage bill as the club continue reshaping Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s squad.
There has also been an acceptance that Nelson needs regular first-team football at this stage of his career after several seasons on the fringes.
The winger spent last season on loan at Brentford but endured another frustrating campaign in which injuries and illness restricted him to 13 appearances across all competitions.
Nelson made only three starts during that spell, all in cup competitions, having also seen his previous loan at Fulham disrupted by a hamstring injury during the 2024/25 campaign.
His Arsenal departure nevertheless closes the book on a relationship stretching back to his childhood after progressing through the Hale End academy.
Nelson signed professional terms in December 2016 before Arsene Wenger handed him his senior debut against Chelsea in the Community Shield the following August.
Loans at Hoffenheim and Feyenoord followed as the former England Under-21 international attempted to turn his considerable potential into regular senior football.
His most memorable Arsenal moment arrived during the 2022/23 title race when he scored a dramatic 97th-minute winner to complete a 3-2 comeback against Bournemouth at the Emirates.
Nelson subsequently signed a new contract in 2023 but never established himself as a regular starter under Arteta despite remaining a useful squad option.
He leaves Arsenal having recorded eight goals and nine assists across 90 senior appearances for his boyhood club.
The decision also continues Arsenal’s attempts to streamline their squad during the closing stages of the transfer window, with several departures already completed this summer.
Nelson can now choose his next club without Arsenal having to negotiate a transfer, and securing regular minutes is likely to be central to his decision after two injury-disrupted loan spells.
For Arsenal, the absence of a transfer fee is balanced partly by the wage saving, while Nelson gets the opportunity to make a fresh start as he enters the prime years of his career.
