Why Man City clash is perfect first test of Arsenal's new era as champions

Why Man City clash is perfect first test of Arsenal's new era as champions

Arsenal’s Community Shield meeting with Manchester City may not define their season, but it represents an ideal opportunity to establish the standards expected after last year’s success.

The Premier League champions face FA Cup holders City at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Sunday, with Mikel Arteta’s players attempting to turn a memorable 2025/26 campaign into the beginning of sustained success.

Winning the league after a 22-year wait changed the conversation around Arsenal, and retaining it while challenging seriously in Europe will inevitably bring greater expectations.

That makes City an appropriate first competitive examination because, regardless of the changes at the Etihad Stadium, they are likely to be among Arsenal’s principal rivals again.

Enzo Maresca has replaced Pep Guardiola after the latter’s extraordinary decade in Manchester, but City still possess a squad capable of competing for every major honour.

There is therefore something valuable about Arsenal landing the first blow before the league campaign even begins.

The Community Shield is regularly dismissed when convenient and celebrated when won, but the trophy itself is arguably less important than what victory could represent for Arsenal.

Arteta’s team should approach Cardiff as an opportunity to remind City that last season was not the culmination of their project but another stage in it.

Arsenal have also evolved during the summer, most notably through the additions of Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, while several younger players have pushed themselves further into the first-team picture.

Guimaraes could be particularly interesting after making his first appearance against Como, with Arteta already describing the Brazilian as a player who will “make us better”.

Sunday offers an early indication of exactly how.

There are also tactical questions to answer after an unusual pre-season disrupted by the World Cup, with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi only recently returning to full training.

Arteta confirmed all three are available, although their limited preparation means Arsenal may not yet resemble the finished product he hopes to have later in the campaign.

That makes the match useful even beyond its result.

Arsenal can test new combinations, assess how Guimaraes changes their midfield and discover how quickly returning internationals can rediscover their competitive rhythm against elite opposition.

Pre-season results have been mixed, including defeats against Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund before Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Como, so there is also value in restoring winning momentum.

The absence of William Saliba and Jurrien Timber will simultaneously test Arsenal’s defensive depth against an attack containing considerable pace and quality.

Arsenal know City particularly well, but Sunday’s encounter begins a different chapter in their rivalry now that Maresca rather than Guardiola occupies the opposite technical area.

Arteta has already insisted his players are hungry to claim the first available trophy, and that mentality is precisely what Arsenal require after becoming champions.

Winning one title created the expectation that they can win another.

Beating City in Cardiff would not prove Arsenal will dominate 2026/27, but it would provide the perfect first statement that the champions intend to remain the team everyone else must catch.
