Confirmed: Gabriel Jesus joins Barcelona
Barcelona’s summer-long pursuit of Arsenal target Julian Alvarez has ended with the Spanish giants signing Gabriel Jesus in a permanent deal worth a reported €10 million, plus €4 million in add ons.
The Brazil international, 28, secures a surprise move to the Camp Nou having been informed by Mikel Arteta that he was surplus to requirements heading into the final year of his contract at the Emirates.
There had been links with Napoli and AC Milan, but when those came to nothing, the general consensus was that Jesus was more likely to stay in London than leave. Given his injury record over the last three years, it’s not insignificant that the Gunners have managed to recoup an eight-figure fee while also getting a year of his significant wages off the books.
In some respects, it feels similar to when the Catalan giants took Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang off Arsenal’s hands in January 2022, a move that ultimately satisfied all parties when a stand-off had seemed more likely.
Leaving as a Premier League champion marks a fitting sign-off for Jesus, even if his role in last season’s title success was relatively limited.
Arriving alongside Oleksandr Zinchenko off the back of four successive titles at Manchester City, the Brazilian was charged with bringing a new dynamic to an Arsenal attack that had looked laboured with Alexandre Lacazette leading the line.
“I think he will set different standards at the club,” was Mikel Arteta’s immediate assessment, and so it proved. Jesus made an electric start in red and white as the Gunners put the previous season’s Champions League qualification near miss behind them to launch an unexpected title challenge.
Unfortunately, his involvement in that campaign took a serious hit when he carried a knee injury into the Qatar World Cup that required surgery and sidelined him for three months. He still finished the season with 11 Premier League goals, including six in Arsenal’s final 10 games, but couldn’t prevent former club City from eventually overhauling the Gunners.
With knee and hamstring issues clearly hampering him physically, Jesus’ confidence seemed to dip as the 2023/24 campaign wore on. As Arsenal embarked on an impressive winning streak in the second half of the season and again went head-to-head with City, he found himself increasingly on the periphery, with Arteta leaning heavily on Kai Havertz to lead the line. Jesus scored just once in the league between January and May.
His fringe status continued during the first half of the 2024/25 campaign before a remarkable burst of form either side of Christmas, including six goals in four games, raised hopes that he might be getting back to his best. Those hopes were dashed in cruel fashion midway through January when he suffered an ACL tear that ruled him out for nine months.
Arteta had little choice but to enter the transfer market and, by the time Jesus returned, he found himself well down the pecking order behind new signing Viktor Gyokeres, as well as Havertz and auxiliary option Mikel Merino.
Last season, he chipped in with three league goals, not to mention a fun brace at the San Siro as Inter Milan were vanquished, but his was largely a bit-part role in a team that had evolved considerably from the swashbuckling counter-attacking side of his early months. Arsenal had become more hard-nosed and practical, with set pieces increasingly important to their success.
In the end, Jesus got his Premier League medal, and it was much deserved. His tally of 32 goals in 123 appearances doesn’t really tell the whole story. The belief and winning mentality he injected into the team back in 2022, while difficult to quantify, was in many respects priceless.
Injuries ultimately prevented him from having the Arsenal career he might have envisaged, but his contribution won’t be forgotten. A popular figure in the dressing room and a player the fans always wanted to see succeed, he’ll leave with plenty of goodwill and, hopefully, the chance to remind everyone at Barcelona just how good he can be.
