The Emirates Stadium may be about to host an event it never has before

The Emirates Stadium has been open for 20 years now.

This is the first season Arsenal fans get to celebrate being Premier League champions in the stadium.

Outside of Arsenal games for both the men’s and women’s sides, the Emirates has hosted international friendlies featuring the likes of Brazil and Argentina, as well as other sports like rugby league.

It has also been used as a concert venue for superstar musical acts such as Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, The Killers, and Arctic Monkeys.

But there is one notable thing it has never hosted, but one of boxing’s most powerful promoters is determined to change that.

Frank Warren wants the Emirates Stadium to host a boxing event

Boxing promoter Frank Warren spoke to The Athletic ahead of Moses Itauma’s IBF world heavyweight title fight against Filip Hrgovic on Saturday.

In part of the interview, he revealed that staging a major boxing event at the Emirates is a lifelong ambition, and one he is yet to fulfil despite a career that has taken him to almost every major venue in the world.

“For me, it is a dream,” Warren said. “I’m an old geezer. I’ve done all the important stadiums.

“I’ve never put a fight on there and that’s a dream for me. Moses can make my dream come true.”

The Emirates has never hosted a professional boxing event before — although Highbury did.

Warren was there when he was a teenager and six decades later, he wants to bring the sport to Arsenal’s modern home just up the road.

“I am determined it’s going to happen,” he insists. “I want Moses to follow in Ali’s footsteps and fight at The Arsenal.”

Eddie Hearn had once considered the Emirates as a venue for the Carl Froch versus George Groves rematch in 2014, but it ultimately went to Wembley instead.

Arsenal’s neighbours across the road have hosted multiple big boxing bouts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Warren is clearly eager to make sure his club follows suit
