“I was a bit surprised” Calafiori discusses his shock early goal for Arsenal
Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring for Arsenal in their Community Shield game against Manchester City yesterday, just seconds into the match, helping the Gunners claim the first trophy of the new season. The left-back made an excellent start to the campaign and found himself in the right place to apply a poacher’s finish to a superb assist from Myles Lewis-Skelly.

“I was a bit surprised to receive the ball. I made the run with the intention to receive the ball, but it was an easy pass because Myles did amazing, and then I just tried to put it in the goal.
“It’s crazy [three defensive players combined]. It gives you an idea of our identity, our intention. It doesn’t matter who stays in that part of the pitch, but you have to fulfil the role.”
His comments underline the importance Arsenal place on players fulfilling their responsibilities regardless of their position. Calafiori’s goal was a clear example of that approach, with the left-back making an attacking run and finishing the opportunity.
