Paul Merson names the one signing Arsenal need to make if they want to win the Champions League

We are heading into the final week of the summer transfer window, and Arsenal are still looking for a new attacker.

The Gunners finally won the Premier League title last season, and they are overwhelming favourites to do it again this campaign.

Arsenal’s squad depth makes them more likely to win it than anyone else, and Paul Merson thinks it’s a guarantee that they will do it, even without any new additions.

However, to win the Champions League, the former Gunner thinks his old club needs one more player.

Paul Merson says Arsenal will win the Champions League if they sign Julian Alvarez

Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Julian Alvarez for a long, long time.

The World Cup winner is in a battle with Atletico Madrid regarding his future. He wants to join Barcelona, but Diego Simeone’s side have blocked that move so far.

Arsenal are waiting in the wings for Alvarez, and if he opens the door for a transfer to the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners will make their move.

Merson believes his old side don’t really need any new reinforcements to retain the Premier League title. He feels what they have is already good enough.

However, if Mikel Arteta wants to become the first Arsenal manager to win the Champions League, Merson thinks Alvarez is the man to sign.

He said on Sky Sports: “I think that (Arsenal’s current squad) is good enough to win the Premier League. I think if they get Alvarez, then we’re talking big-time Champions League as well.

“I think they need that little bit of extra dust when it gets to the Champions League. In the final, you need that little bit of magic, and Alvarez brings that.”

Arsenal don’t have many options other than Julian Alvarez

Arsenal have found themselves in a situation in which Alvarez appears to be their only target for the centre-forward position.

Eli Junior Kroupi was seen as an option, but he is out injured and is no longer a target.

That leaves Arsenal in a very difficult position in the final days of the transfer window, as if Alvarez refuses to join them, they may have to give up on signing a new striker.

It remains to be seen what will happen, but as things stand, it is looking likely that Arsenal will not sign anyone else this summer.
